A Christmas Gift

Christmas Gift

Once upon a Christmas gone, when days were short and the cold was on
the malls were bright with lights and song – my life was dark and hope was gone
Once upon a Christmas year, my soul was bruised – I lived in fear
but sometimes once upon a time: is one small gift at Christmas time

that was just the way it seemed, my Santa Clause was drop down mean
a few small gifts for two small kids I’d go without most anything
and like the candles burning out, my heavy heart was filled with doubt
gifts that might as well be stone my Christmas wish: a happy home

some will rise and some may die once upon their Christmas time
will angels grace my Christmas tree for every soul I cannot see?

Once upon that Christmas day, with love and hugs for children ways
peace did bless my world of shame when Santa slept that Christmas day
kiss the world through Christmas tears and struggle down the endless fears
but once upon my Christmas view – a winter sun came shining through

will angels grace my Christmas tree for every soul I cannot see?
some will rise and some may die once upon their Christmas time

What is this? I hesitate… What is this? A bold mistake?
a basket! was it really true? who put that in my Christmas view?
shining brightly in the snow with ribbon, tag and colored bow
once upon a Christmas time – a name tag said this gift was mine

I looked around, I didn’t know who left those footprints in the snow
I closed my hand and rushed inside – a Christmas gift and it was mine
shaking hands to save the wrap – gifted scent that made me gasp
jeweled bars, satsuma soap they came from love and they gave me hope

will angels grace my Christmas tree for every soul I cannot see?
some will rise and some may die once upon their Christmas time

joy and wonder precious gift and fears of being found with this
who wrote my name in scented line? once upon that Christmas time
I didn’t know those passers-by who must have seen me right outside,
glued up boots – house coat tied – frozen tears – I was alive

some will rise and some may die once upon their Christmas time
will angels grace my Christmas tree for every soul I cannot see?

bars of scented happiness with bitter cold and fuzzy head
Once upon a Christmas night that gift I held it oh so tight
I hid them in my bedroom drawers, they got me through those adult wars,
Once upon a Christmas dream – scented bars of tangerine

sweet satsuma hold me strong, flooding fears for courage gone
I’m giving thanks this Christmas day for one small gift that came my way
I did rise – I did not die and once upon my Christmas time
bars of soap you wrapped to bring, meant more to me than anything

will angels grace my Christmas tree for every soul I cannot see?
will angels grace my Christmas tree for every soul I cannot see? mmmm mmm
